In Washington state, alimony is called “maintenance.” Maintenance is not a matter of right, but meant to be rehabilitative for the disadvantaged spouse to assist that spouse in gaining education and experience to become self-supporting. Maintenance also is used to equalize the economic disparity between parties based on their standard of living during the marriage, need and ability to pay, as well as other controlling factors. Consult with an experienced family law attorney to determine the appropriate course in your particular case to determine the appropriateness of maintenance.
